I'm going to be doing the majority of my blogging over on my other blog 'Living Our Own Lives'. My original plan was to combine my photography blog with my family blog over here, but since I have 4 years of history over on my other blog and not the time nor inclination to transfer all those posts here, I've decided to continue blogging over there.

I will most likely just be posting strictly about photography here and about our family and everything else over there.

Cent Sale

The boys and I attended a "cent sale" yesterday. A young girl from this family who are a part of our unschooling group came up with the idea and all the kids brought toys they longer wanted/used to sell for pennies that were then donated to the local animal shelter. The kids also brought their own pennies to use to buy things they wanted from the stuff everyone else brought.

It was a big motivator for the boys to go through their toys and decide what they wanted to get rid of. They came up with a good size pile of stuff that they no longer wanted that we were able to bring to the sale.

Damek picked out 2 small lego cars to buy and ended up dumping the rest of his pennies into the collection jar for the animal shelter. Kyan bought the following: a toy truck, a portable keyboard, 2 stuffed dinosaurs, a battery operated transformer, a batter operated microphone, The Thing action figure, a rescue heroes action figure, & a dragon whose wings & mouth move by pressing buttons on it's back.

After the kids sold/bought all that they wanted (the remaining toys were going to be donated to charity) they spent the rest of the afternoon playing inside and outside, snacking and also taking a rather long dip in the hot tub:)

Kyan fell asleep on the way home, but woke up as I was carrying him into the house. We made homemade macaroni and cheese for dinner and Kyan played with his new toys while Damek played on the computer and then a bit later with his new lego cars until we went to bed, where Damek and I stayed up until midnight reading on 'The Complete Chronicles Of Narnia'.

Photoshop Actions

I've never used photoshop much in regards to altering my photos, mostly use it to crop and lighten or darken as the case may be. That being said, I've discovered some different Photoshop Actions recently and have been having fun trying out different ones on different images and really liking the results. I've come to realize that only certain actions look good on certain images, and some images look better left alone.

I came across some free polaroid style actions over on the Deviant Art website, Polaroid Generator V1 and Polaroid Generator V2. Also, after commenting on someone's photograph on flickr, they pointed me to some free action sets over on Pioneer Woman's blog here.

The first 6 images I used various actions from the Polaroid Generator sets.

I won a giveway on Rhianne's blog For the easily distracted... The giveaway was a chosen item from the etsy shop, That Kate Creates. I chose the 'Holga round my neck' necklace, and I'm waiting anxiously (& patiently as it is coming from London) for it to arrive.

Although I haven't had my Holga around my neck in some time, winning this giveaway has inspired me to get it out and shoot with it.

If you've never shot with a Holga or seen photographs taken with one, they tend to look old or vintage due to the cameras plastic lens. The lens gives off a vignetting around the center of the picture where the focusing tends to get more blurry as well as a bit darker as it moves away from the center. Sometimes you also get light leaks from the flimsy way the side of the camera shuts. Of course all of these nuances only add character to the photographs as any Holga enthusiast will tell you:)

I shot this while sitting underneath this big tree at our camp in Bryce Canyon this past summer. I looked up and saw this and had to capture the wonderful lines and the texture of the pine needles. These trees are large and impressive and are pretty abundant in the park, especially in the campgrounds.

Randomness

Photography helps me to see things wholly. Sometimes it might be that I notice something because I've got my camera and I'm looking for something that catches my eye, or it might be that I'm choosing to photograph an object at a different angle then I normally would and notice something different about it, or it's that I'm looking at the photograph enlarged on the computer and really scrutinizing what it is that I like or don't like about it.

Both of the above photographs I shot over around a year ago and after uploading them initially I didn't think twice about either one. Today, after examining them both a bit closer, I know why I shot them in the first place. I'm drawn to lines and patterns when I'm photographing, and both of these seemingly mundane objects drew me into exploring them a bit closer with my camera and allowed me to see the beauty that I wouldn't have otherwise seen upon first glance.

What you don't see

Photography is a tricky medium sometimes. I agree with both camps, that photographs can be lies and that they can be truths.

"All photos are accurate. None of them is the truth." - Richard Avedon

"The camera cannot lie, but it can be an accessory to untruth." - Harold Evans

"Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world." - Arnold Newman

I also agree with this sentiment from Frank I. Reiter: "Rather it is ideas that are true or not true, and words and photographs are means of passing ideas between people.

A parable may be entirely fictitious, and yet express a truth far better than a simple description of that truth. A photograph from which some distracting element has been removed might be showing a view that has never existed, and yet better express deeper truths than one with that element left intact."

With that being said, I was thinking about this subject yesterday after shooting a few frames while we were playing a new board game (Sequence) the boys had received as an early christmas gift from their cousins.

What you don't see in this series of photographs is:

- Kyan knocking over his drink onto the blanket

- Echo (our very large German Shepherd), knocking over Damek's drink over on the other side of the blanket about 5 minutes later

- Damek reaching over to grab something off the blanket and taking the blanket as well as the board game with him and thus having to figure out where all our pieces were on the board game so we could continue playing

-All of us blocking Echo from walking over the board game as she went back and forth from one side of the room to the next (we have a small house)

- Kyan quitting the game after he got his first sequence (apparrently quitting while he was ahead?)

- Damek ultimately winning the game

Leaves

I got virtually all the leaves raked up yesterday and trucked to the garden in a wheelbarrow. I dumped them onto the compost piles in the garden. The chickens were excited to have something new to dig around in to find bugs, and the garden will be happy once those leaves and other goodies that comprise the compost pile break down and we have lovely black soil to add to it.

The wild plum hasn't dropped it's leaves yet, nor has our baby cherry tree or the neighbors huge apple tree that hangs over our driveway and garage, so there will be still be more raking to be done before winter hits. At least I got what was out there raked up before the rain started this morning. Forecast calls for rain and possibly snow for the next three days, after a week of unseasonably warm temperatures.

Looks like winter is slowly on it's way.

Past & Present

I'm in the process of archiving all of my photographs. Of course most of this will involve locating, organizing and scanning lots of negatives, which I both do and don't look forward to. I look forward to unearthing all that goes along with a particular photograph. The memories surrounding the shot, the time & place, the critiquing of images, ect.. The not looking forward to is the reason they have been sitting untouched in boxes for going on 2 years now. Tedious & time consuming.

I've decided that I'm going to start including a "past & present" post of 2 photographs. I'll post one photograph that I've taken in the past and one that was taken in the present. The present might be now, as in the day I post it, or it might be one that was taken in the present as in within the last year. I will date the photographs as near to when they were taken as is possible.

I look forward to this journey of unearthing my photographic past and look forward to seeing my evolution as a photographer on and into the future. Won't you join me?

Harvested these from our garden a couple days ago. We drizzled them with olive oil, sprinkled them with salt and pepper and then wrapped them in foil and roasted them at 450 degrees for 25 minutes. Took them out of the oven, removed skins, drizzled them with balsamic vinegar and devoured them:)

Early last summer we thought about cutting this tree down to replace it with a different type of fruit tree. Well, we actually got a decent harvest off last year it and the boys loved the plums, so we're keeping it:)

I never noticed before how beautiful this tree was in the spring. On monday evening I glanced out the kitchen window and the way it was glowing caught my eye. I think it was the perfect pairing of the blossoms and the evening sun.

We always have a plethora of hummingbirds that visit our Trumpet Vines every summer while they are in bloom. We used to hang a hummingbird feeder by our deck, but stopped as the hummingbirds prefer the nectar from the trumpet flowers and the feeder would sit untouched.

This particular bird on this particular day was guarding the trumpet vines & had claimed them as his (or hers) territory, and would sit on this branch and look over at the trumpet vines to make sure no other hummingbirds dared to come drink from the flowers. If they did, he immediately flew over, drove them off and then would come back and resume his watch.

These shots are of a rusted old train track rail that was planted in our yard before we owned the property. I was drawn to explore it yesterday, something that hasn't happened in the 13 years that we've lived here.

I've always liked the character, texture & color of rusted objects. Rust itself is very abstract when photographed in a way that doesn't reveal what the object is, similar to an abstract painting.

Film & Digital (not Film vs. Digital)

Time Warp

The above picture was shot with a 4x5 camera in a studio. To achieve the affect, I exposed the piece of film 5 separate times, moving the watch for each exposure.

Multiple exposures can also be achieved with digital images by combining images in photoshop. I've been thinking a lot about traditional photography using film cameras & digital photography using digital cameras and computers. My photography has evolved to include both.

I was 21 when my boyfriend (now husband) gave me my first 35mm SLR film camera. When I was 26, I decided to take a photography class at the local community college. I was hooked. I loved everything about photography. Shooting, developing, processing & printing in the darkroom. It was a whole process from start to finish. The processing and printing is just as much a part of the art as the shooting is. I would lose myself in the darkroom, and disliked that I had a day job to go to, because I would have to stop at some point and pack my things up to go to work.

Using a digital camera is different. Now I upload my pictures to my computer, play around with them in Photoshop a little and either upload them to my shops for sale, or print them off my printer. It's different, but no less my art because it's digital. I do believe that there is a certain quality achieved in the darkroom that cannot be replicated on a computer, but it's different, not better, just different.

My decision to go digital had almost entirely to do with time. Or lack thereof when you have 2 small children underfoot. I no longer had access to a darkroom (dreamed of putting one in the basement years ago), and I just didn't have the time to scan all of my images to the computer in order to view them.

I still have my film cameras (Hasselblad, Canon EOS Elan 35mm, Holga Toy), and I still use them on occasion. With my digital camera (Canon 40D) I just have another tool with which to create my art is all.

Went to the park last week with friends, and when I got out my camera, this was one of the first things that caught my eye. The bright colors of the kite contrasted with the bare branches of the trees.

one thing I've always loved to do is go around my house with my camera and photograph things. it helps me look at things differently, and opens up my world in terms of what makes a good or even a great photograph. you don't have to go to some far off land, or even venture outside your own space to capture a beautiful image. look around you, it's all in how you interpret your world.

note: the above picture is from a set of souvenir coasters my parents brought back from Paris for Lee and I in 2001.

I love how looking at past images brings back memories in my mind. When I look back on images I've shot, I remember very vividly every detail surrounding the subject and what happened or took place in those moments. Where I was, how I got there, who I was with and what I was thinking when I clicked the shutter button. Most times I don't remember anything else about the particular day, but the time surrounding shooting images remains as if it were yesterday.
